“Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.” Psalm 25:4-5

How does a disciple (follower of Jesus) grow daily in the Lord? King David offers us three simple prayers that every single believer can pray if they desire to grow as disciples.

  1. Make me– Ask God to shape and mold you in His image and according to His ways. Remember that God is the potter and it is His desire to form you in His image and into a useful vessel to carry out His purposes.
  2. Teach me– Approach God as a humble and hungry learner, desiring to better know the salvation (Gospel) of God, willing to learn to wait (trust) in the Lord and enthusiastic to walk according to His paths (Christian living). No matter how long you have followed Jesus, always maintain a growth mindset, approaching God’s Word with a desire to be taught and corrected by God.
  3. Lead me– Admit to God your need for Him to lead you. David was a King who recognized his need to be a follower of the ultimate authority. No matter your leadership influence, the best spiritual leaders are gracious followers of the King of Kings. A growing disciple has decided in his heart that God’s Word (the Bible) must have the first and final say in leading his attitude, beliefs and behaviors.

What are the qualities of a growing disciple? A growing disciple is moldable (make me), teachable (teach me) and steerable (lead me) in her humble submission to Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
